Lockout & Tagout (LOTO) is a safety procedure that prevents accidental exposure to hazardous energy during maintenance, repair, or servicing of equipment.

How LOTO Works:

• A lockout device (e.g., padlock) secures the energy source.
• A tagout device (e.g., warning tag) informs employees not to operate the equipment.
• The equipment is shut down and isolated from energy sources.
• Stored energy is checked and released.
• Isolation is verified through a test run.

When is LOTO Required?

• When equipment could unexpectedly start up or release stored energy.
• When workers could be injured during cleaning, repairing, or servicing.

Examples of Energy Isolation Devices:

• Valves
• Breakers
• Switches
• Blank flanges for piping systems

LOTO Procedure Steps:

• Notify affected employees.
• Identify hazards and procedures.
• Shut down the equipment.
• Isolate from the energy source.
• Apply lockout/tagout devices.
• Check for stored energy.
• Verify isolation and test.
• Restore equipment to operation after completing work.
